SCOUTS

Scouts range in age from 10½ years to 15 years. At 15 years of age the Scout progresses into Venturers.

Whilst 1st Tamar is a Sea Scout Group and our focus is primarily on water activities, there is also a strong emphasis on extending into all areas of scouting. Camping, hiking, bushcraft, first aid and orienteering are just some of the activities arranged for the Scouts.

The pride of the Scout Troop are the three patrol boats- Matthew Flinders AB (Allan Butt) KID (Ken & Ian Dickinson) and the support vessel- JC (Launceston Jaycees). These craft are the hub of most activities throughout the summer months. The boats are used under oars and sail at every opportunity. Since the installation of our own pontoon, water activities are no longer controlled by the tides and we are now able to launch the boats at all times of the day and evening.

The Troop is comprised of four Patrols lead by a Patrol Leader (P.L.) and an Assistant Patrol Leader (A.P.L.). A major focus of Scouting is the ability to work cooperatively as part of a team. Each Scout will need a Scout Field Book and Challenge Passbook, which are both available from our uniform cupboard. These are a valuable and detailed resource of skills for every Scouting challenge.

A Scout commences by earning the Scout craft Badge and then progresses through the Award Scheme; working towards the Pioneer, Explorer and Adventure levels. The one target that must be achieved to qualify at every level is Citizenship. Challenge badges or interest badges are awarded as the result of the Scout accepting a challenge to go further in gaining knowledge of their chosen subject.
